How to Choose the Perfect Vintage Rug for Your Home

How to Choose the Perfect Vintage Rug for Your Home

Vintage rugs have a kind of magic to them.

They bring warmth, texture and a story - all while grounding your space (quite literally). But with so many shapes, styles and colours out there, knowing how to choose the perfect vintage rug for your home can feel like a bit of a puzzle.

Here at Studio Ronde, we believe that rugs are the starting point for a room - the piece that everything else dances around. If you’ve ever fallen in love with one of our rugs, you’ll know how it can completely transform a space. Here’s how to make sure you’re choosing the one.

1. Start with the size

Before you fall head over heels for a dreamy pattern, take a moment to measure your space. Vintage rugs are one-of-a-kind - and that includes their dimensions.

  • Living rooms: Ideally, your rug should be large enough for at least the front legs of your furniture to sit on it. Too small and it can make everything feel disconnected.
  • Bedrooms: A rug under the bed should extend past the sides by around 60cm - to give those toes something soft in the morning.
  • Dining areas: Make sure chairs still sit on the rug when pulled out - aim for a border of around 70–90cm around your table.

Studio Tip: If you’ve fallen for a slightly-too-small rug, layer it over a larger jute base for that collected, lived-in look.

2. Let the rug set the tone

We always say: design the room around the rug. It’s easier to match paint, cushions and art to a rug than the other way around.

  • Want a calm, neutral space? Look for soft tones and faded patterns.
  • After a bold focal point? Try a Moroccan or Turkish piece with punchy colour and geometric motifs.
  • Styling an eclectic space? Embrace a mix of eras - vintage rugs are chameleons.

Every rug we sell has been handpicked for its personality - no two are ever the same, and that’s the beauty of it.

3. Think about wear and material

Vintage rugs have already lived lives - and that’s part of what makes them special. But it’s good to know what kind of wear is welcome.

  • High-traffic areas? Opt for wool - it’s durable, naturally stain-resistant and ages beautifully.
  • Want something lightweight? Kilims are flat-woven and great for layering.
  • Soft underfoot? Look for pile height and thickness - we always include that info in our product descriptions.

Don’t fear a bit of patina or fading — that’s the charm. But steer clear of threadbare patches if you want something that’ll last another lifetime.

4. Check the colour in natural light

Vintage colours can be tricky - some lean warmer, some cooler, and they can shift depending on the time of day. If you’re unsure, pop us a message and we’ll send more photos or videos to help you get a feel for it.

5. Go with your gut

Sometimes, you just know. That moment when you see a rug and it feels like it already belongs in your home? Trust that instinct.

Our collection is curated with love - and once a piece is gone, it’s gone. So if it speaks to you, don’t let it slip away.

Final Thought

Whether you’re building a room from scratch or simply adding the finishing touch, a vintage rug brings soul, story and timeless style. At Studio Ronde, we believe that choosing a rug should be joyful — like finding a treasure that’s been waiting just for you.
